Short answer: the correction is real if you bought new product this year and imaginary if you hold anything older. Our new Lab Booster Box Index, built from 29 English booster boxes priced nightly on TCGplayer, sits at 120.0 against 100 a year ago: seasoned boxes are up 20.0% year over year and 6.7% off a July 8 peak, after more than doubling the year before. Meanwhile new Elite Trainer Boxes lose a median 32% of their launch price inside six months, the newest set's boxes are the only ones flat or down, and sales volume did not slow into the summer pullback. It rose. Below: the index, every box priced, what sold, and what a correction would actually look like in this data.
The Lab Booster Box Index, June 2024 to today
This is the chart the whole debate should start from. It is the average day-over-day price move of every English booster box that has been on the market at least 90 days and has actually sold in the last quarter, chained together and set to 100 on September 1, 2025. Read it like a stock index: 121 means the average seasoned box is worth 21% more than it was a year ago. The hatched band is a Mar 2026 to Jul 2026 stretch where our pipeline was down; each box is interpolated across it and nothing in this piece leans on what happened inside it.
Two things jump out. First, the scale of the run that preceded this year: a box bought in September 2024 had more than doubled by September 2025, and a third of the boxes in the table below did better than that. Any reading of 2026 that ignores that base is going to call normal breathing a collapse. Second, the shape of the last twelve months is a staircase, not a cliff: a sharp move up in September and October 2025, a 12% giveback into the holidays, a grind higher through the winter, a July peak, and a 7% pullback since. That last leg is the part people are feeling right now.
How the index is built (the whole method, no hidden steps)
- Universe. Every English product TCGplayer names a "Booster Box", Sword & Shield era onward. Cases, displays, and 18-pack half boxes are excluded, so every member is the 36-pack box. 29 boxes qualify today.
- Seasoning. A box joins 90 days after its first price snapshot. This keeps launch-week hype and the decay that follows it out of the index. That decay is real and it gets its own section below.
- Liquidity. A box counts on a given day only if it has a price that day and at least one Unopened sale on TCGplayer in the trailing 13 weeks. 18 boxes met the bar at the base date, 26 do today.
- Return, not price. Each day we take each member's percentage change, average them equally, and multiply the index by that average. Boxes can enter or leave without moving the level, which is why an index of prices would be wrong here.
- Equal weight. A $700 Sword & Shield base box and a $190 Pitch Black box move the index the same amount. We also computed a dollar-volume-weighted version as a check; it is in the appendix and it agrees.
- Gap. No snapshots Mar 2026 to Jul 2026. Each box is linearly interpolated across it. Every chart marks the window.
What this means for you
If it is a box from 2024 or earlier, you are up about 21% on the year and 7% off your July high. That is a pullback inside an uptrend, not a regime change. If it is Mega Evolution era product or an ETB you bought at launch, you are the correction. Decide whether you are holding for the print run to end, because that is the only thing that has reliably turned a new product around in this data.
Do not buy ETBs or bundles at launch expecting appreciation; the median one is 32% cheaper six months later. Boxes from sets 12 to 24 months old have been the steady compounders, and the last two months are the first time in a year that more of them are falling than rising. If you wanted a dip, breadth at 26% says this is the closest thing to one since December.
Volume is not your problem. TCGplayer moved 1,323 boxes a week across this universe in the last six months, up from 1,158, and July was the busiest month of the year. Your margin problem is on new product, where the market clears launch inventory by cutting price for six months. Hold older boxes, turn new ones fast.
Three different things people mean by "correction"
The argument goes in circles because three different claims travel under one word. Our data can test each of them separately.
1. "Sealed prices are down year over year." No.
Of the 20 boxes with a price on both September 1 2025 and today, 18 are up and 2 are down. The median box gained +20.5%. Every era except the newest is up by double digits: Sword & Shield boxes median +28.4%, Scarlet & Violet +21.2%, Mega Evolution -2.2% (two boxes). The sub-indices for smaller formats are stronger still: Elite Trainer Boxes 151, booster bundles 165, loose booster packs 152, all against 100 a year ago. Whatever this year was, it was not a decline in what sealed Pokemon costs.
2. "Prices have rolled over since the summer." Yes, modestly and broadly.
The index peaked at 128.6 on July 8, 2026 and is -6.7% since. That is small. What is not small is how many boxes are participating. On July 8, 2026, 91.3% of boxes were above their price of 90 days earlier. Today 26.1% are. The last time breadth was this weak was the first week of January, at the bottom of the holiday drawdown, and prices went on to make new highs by March. A broad, shallow pullback after a 12-month run is what a healthy market does. It is also exactly what a top looks like in its first two months, and the data cannot tell those apart yet.
3. "The product I bought is worth less than I paid." Yes, if you bought it new.
This is the correction that is actually happening, and the index deliberately excludes it. We took every box, ETB, and bundle released since our data begins and tracked its TCGplayer market price from one week after release. The median Elite Trainer Box is -32% six months later. The median booster bundle is -28%. The median booster box is -1%. Same sets, same packs, opposite outcomes, and the difference is supply: ETBs and bundles are what big-box retail stocks and restocks, so their secondary price is pinned to shelf price until the print run ends. Boxes sell through distributors and hobby stores and thin out first.
If you bought a Mega Evolution Pokemon Center ETB in September 2025 you are down 46%. If you bought a Pitch Black or Chaos Rising booster box the week they launched in July you are down 31%. Those are real losses and they are what most of the "correction" posts are describing. They are also what new product has done in every year of this data, including the year prices doubled.
Every box we track, two years of prices
Two windows so you can see the base effect: September 2024 to September 2025 (the run) and September 2025 to today (the "correction"). Boxes that joined TCGplayer's catalog later show the windows they have. Half boxes are not included anywhere in this piece. Units are TCGplayer boxes sold in the last twelve months.

TCGplayer market price on each date; "n/a" means the box had no listing that day. "From peak" is today against the box's highest snapshot in our data. Four Sword & Shield boxes (Fusion Strike, Brilliant Stars, Lost Origin, Chilling Reign) dropped out of TCGplayer's catalog for part of 2025 and returned at two to four times their 2024 price; they are in the index when they have data and out of the year-over-year median. Boxes with no current TCGplayer price are omitted. Buy links are affiliate links.
The two-window view is the most useful table in this piece. Take Paldea Evolved: $137 in September 2024, $400 a year later, $479 today. The first window is +191%, the second is +20%. Nobody calls a year of +20% a correction unless the year before was +191%. Every box with both windows shows the same deceleration, from a median +122% to a median +21%. The market did not reverse. It slowed from an unsustainable pace to a merely strong one, and then, since July, paused.
Want the index every week?
The Lab Report goes out Sundays with the week's biggest movers and the reason behind each one. The Booster Box Index is joining it.
Sales volume: nobody stopped buying
The second half of the correction claim is that demand dried up. We have a year of TCGplayer sales history for every box in the universe, unopened condition, so this is checkable. Across the tracked boxes TCGplayer moved an average of 1,158 boxes a week from September 2025 through February 2026 and 1,323 a week from March through August. Dollar volume was flat at roughly $349k a week in both halves. The busiest month of the year was Jul 2026 with 7,983 boxes, which is also the month prices peaked. The quietest was Jan 2026 with 2,634, in the middle of the holiday drawdown.

|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 2025 | 5,997 | $1,969k | 100.0 |
| Oct 2025 | 4,592 | $1,422k | 112.3 |
| Nov 2025 | 6,126 | $1,808k | 105.7 |
| Dec 2025 | 5,441 | $1,451k | 102.7 |
| Jan 2026 | 2,634 | $816k | 102.3 |
| Feb 2026 | 3,804 | $1,174k | 108.4 |
| Mar 2026 | 5,020 | $1,437k | 111.7 |
| Apr 2026 | 4,016 | $1,139k | 117.8 |
| May 2026 | 6,076 | $1,836k | 121.2 |
| Jun 2026 | 4,557 | $1,354k | 124.5 |

| Aug 2026 | 6,741 | $1,625k | 124.6 |
Does falling volume predict falling prices? The data says the reverse.
The correction thesis needs volume to lead price down: buyers leave, sellers cut. We tested it week by week. The correlation between a week's unit volume and that week's index move is -0.24. Between a week's volume and the next week's index move it is -0.33. Both negative, both modest, 50 weeks. Heavy weeks are followed by weaker prices, light weeks by firmer ones. That is not demand disappearing. That is supply being sold into strength: when prices spike, more boxes come out of closets, and the extra supply is what softens the next week. The July peak is the cleanest example, Jul 2026's record volume arriving in the same weeks as the top.
The second chart is the sharper finding. Across boxes, the more copies TCGplayer sold in the year, the less the price rose. The five Mega Evolution era boxes each moved 8,189 to 10,664 units, several times the volume of a typical Scarlet & Violet box, and they are the only boxes flat or down. Sword & Shield base moved 35 boxes all year and rose +38%. Price in sealed Pokemon is set by how much is left, and volume is a direct read on how much is left.
Sub-indices: ETBs and bundles outran boxes
The same construction applied to the other formats. All four lines start at 100 on September 1, 2025.
Elite Trainer Boxes are at 151 and booster bundles at 165, against boxes at 120. That surprised us and it matters for the ETB question. The small formats are the ones retail stocks, so they are also the ones that go out of print at retail first and most visibly; a Scarlet & Violet ETB that was $104 last September is $218 now because Target stopped having it. Of the 72 ETBs with a full year, 69 are up, median +54%. Every one of the 20 bundles is up, median +82%. The losers in the ETB list are all Pokemon Center exclusives from Mega Evolution (3 of 28 PC exclusives are down on the year), which launched at a premium the market has since refused to pay.

The ETB premium: what you pay per pack for the box with the promo card
Dividing each ETB's price by its pack count and each box's price by 36 puts both on one axis. In mid-2024 the median ETB cost 1.23 times as much per pack as the same set's booster box. Today it is 1.56. Buyers are paying a 56% premium per pack for the ETB format, up from 23%. Part of that is the promo card and accessories, but the spread did not widen because promo cards got better. It widened because ETBs left retail shelves faster than boxes left distributor warehouses.
By era: the older the set, the better the year
Sword & Shield boxes finished the year at 121, Scarlet & Violet at 119, Mega Evolution at 102. The Mega Evolution line is the correction, and it has a shape worth knowing: down 25% into December as the first two sets flooded in, back to par by spring, flat since. The two Mega Evolution boxes with a full year are +0.4% and -4.8%, on 8,232 units for the Enhanced box alone. That is the pattern to expect from any set while it is in print at this scale: the market absorbs it at roughly shelf price and does not reward holding until the print run is over.
The correction that already happened: Prismatic Evolutions
If you want to see what a real sealed correction looks like in this data, it is not 2026. It is Prismatic Evolutions in 2025. The set launched in January 2025 into the most speculative sealed market of the modern era. The booster bundle hit $110.15 on January 23, 2025, then fell to $59.10 by September as reprints landed: a -46% drawdown in eight months. The Super-Premium Collection went from $493 to $236. The Surprise Box lost 60%. That is a correction.
Buy on TCGplayerAnd then it recovered. The bundle is $91.28 today, +54% above its September low, on 23,300 units sold in the year, the most of any bundle we track. The ETB made a new all-time high in March 2026 at $197 and is $155 now. The lesson from the one clean correction in our data is that it ended when the reprints stopped, took about eight months top to bottom, and the products that were pinned to shelf price for a year became the strongest performers once the shelves emptied. Anyone applying the word to 2026 should show a chart that looks like the left half of this one. We could not find it outside of new product.
Appendix: does the weighting change the answer?
Equal weight is the simplest honest choice, and the reason we recommend it is that a dollar-volume-weighted version tells the same story with more noise. Weighted by trailing-quarter units times price, the index ended at 120.2 against the equal-weight 120.0, peaked higher (135.7) and dipped lower in December because the Mega Evolution boxes that were falling were also the ones selling. When two reasonable methods land within two points of each other over a year, the result is the market, not the method.
When this reading fails
Three ways. First, if the July peak turns out to be a top, the next six months will show breadth staying under 50% and the index making a lower high; the data does not yet distinguish a pause from a turn, and we will update this page when it does. Second, this is TCGplayer market price only. If the marginal seller has moved to eBay or in-person, we are measuring the venue that kept the buyers. Third, our universe is the boxes TCGplayer lists with a market price, which under-represents vintage and Japanese product. A collector whose portfolio is 2016 booster boxes is not described by anything here.
Data notes
- Prices: TCGplayer market price, one snapshot per product per night, captured by The Lab TCG from June 29, 2024 to September 7, 2026. No snapshots Mar 2026 to Jul 2026; each product is linearly interpolated across that window for index chaining and every chart marks it.
- Sales: TCGplayer sales history, Unopened condition, weekly buckets from September 8, 2025 to August 31, 2026. Units, not dollars, except where dollar volume is stated (units times that week's market price). One year of sales history exists, so sales are compared half to half, not year over year.
- Index: equal-weighted chain of daily log returns across members, base 100 on September 1, 2025; 90-day seasoning; 13-week liquidity screen; universe of 29 English booster boxes from Sword & Shield onward (cases and displays excluded). Sub-indices use identical rules on 93 ETBs, 28 bundles, 126 booster packs.
- Launch decay: products first listed after June 29, 2024, price path relative to day 7 after first listing, medians shown only where at least five products have data at that age.
- Correlations are Pearson on 50 weekly observations (volume versus price) and 21 boxes (cross-section). Small samples; treat signs as informative and magnitudes as rough.
- Full method and rules: docs/superpowers/specs/2026-09-07-sealed-index-design.md in our repository. The index is a point-in-time computation as of 2026-09-07; a nightly-updated version is planned.
