The comparable product from the last anniversary set took five years of real demand to reach a smaller multiple. What this means for you
If the two Nidorina promos are not the point, the regular Elite Trainer Box gets you into the set for 3.7x MSRP instead of 8.3x, and it is still in stock. If the promos are the point, the premium has already fallen 32% since the crash; waiting has cost nothing so far.
The 2021 Pokémon Center ETB needed five years to reach 9.3x MSRP. This year's hit 12.2x in a week, on a sellout, not on collectors deciding it was worth that over time. A price that gets to the five-year outcome in a week is not a discount waiting to happen.

What actually happened on Jul 22
Pokémon Center opened 30th Celebration preorders with no announcement, about two months ahead of the September 16, 2026 worldwide launch. Queue estimates ran 4 to 7 hours through the day, sessions that reached the front timed out, the site stopped loading for long stretches, and some shoppers were flagged as bots for refreshing too often. The Elite Trainer Box, the only 30th Celebration product with the Pokémon Center-exclusive Nidorina promos, sold out by mid-afternoon. TCGplayer listings followed within hours, opening at $730.09.
The panic price already overshot the five-year price
The Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box is thin, sold nowhere else and not restocked: 146 units have traded on TCGplayer since the crash, against 5,115 for the regular ETB in the same window. That thinness is why the peak was so far above MSRP, and why it has come down 32% since without a single pack being opened: a small number of buyers set the price in both directions.

What the 2021 Pokémon Center ETB says about paying this
Buy on TCGplayerThe last anniversary set's Pokémon Center exclusive is the only real comparable: same channel, same exclusivity, same two-promo structure. It launched at roughly $59.99 in October 2021. When our pricing starts in June 2024, three years in, it was already $106 (1.8x). Two more years of real collector demand took it to $561 today, 9.3x MSRP, on 303 units traded in the last year alone.
This year's Pokémon Center ETB reached 12.2x MSRP in the week preorders opened, ahead of where five years bought the 2021 box. The regular Celebrations ETB, sold everywhere and not exclusive, is a cheaper long-run comparison: $356 today against a $49.99 MSRP, 7.1x, on 1,011 units in the last year, more than three times the exclusive version's liquidity.
When this reasoning fails
- If the Nidorina promos turn out to be the set's real chase, independent of the box they came in. Product-locked promos have done this before; the market for the box and the market for the promo pulled from it can diverge once packs are opened.
- If Pokémon Center restocks. It has not announced one, but the regular ETB and other 30th Celebration products have shipped in waves through December; a Pokémon Center restock would reset this math fast.
- Presale and pre-launch prices are thin markets. 146 units is enough to trust a trend, not enough to trust a single day's print, especially the crash-week peak itself.
- The 2021 comparable is one data point. If 30th Celebration's exclusivity, its worldwide same-day launch, or its print run differ enough from Celebrations, five years from now could look different in either direction.
