What this means for you
Buy playables after launch week, not in it. Pitch Black's Mega Darkrai ex Ultra Rare was $15.44 on launch day and $6.76 on Oct 9. The Japanese Mega Rayquaza ex double rare is $2.36 today.
Wait for the English Mega Rayquaza ex to settle. On the last four sets it would land near $259 as a Special Illustration Rare. The Japanese gold card's $945.56 rests on one copy sold in 30 days, so set an alert rather than chase it.

Why Japanese prices are the preview
Mega Evolution: Delta Reign launches in English on November 6, 2026. Its cards come from Storm Emeralda, which came out in Japan on July 31, 2026: 116 cards, worth $1,538.69 as a full set at TCGplayer market prices on Oct 8. Each of the last four English sets did the same with one Japanese set, and the same Mega topped both: Inferno X became Phantasmal Flames (Mega Charizard X ex), Nihil Zero became Perfect Order (Mega Zygarde ex), Ninja Spinner became Chaos Rising (Mega Greninja ex), Abyss Eye became Pitch Black (Mega Darkrai ex). So the Japanese set has had 70 days of real sales on the cards Delta Reign brings to English. For the sealed side, see the Delta Reign presale prices against MSRP and the launch hub.
What the last four English sets did with the same Japanese prices
For each pair, the Japanese card and its English printing, both TCGplayer market prices on October 9, 2026. The headline Mega's gold card is where the gap is widest: the English one sells for 26% to 61% of the Japanese price. The Japanese gold cards also barely trade, 1, 5, 1, 1 copies sold in 30 days against 64, 109, 179, 221 for the English ones. The headline Special Illustration Rare holds 50% to 149%, and in 3 of 4 sets it now sells for more than the English gold card. Lower down the list it reverses: 15 of 18 other Special Illustration Rares sell for more in English than in Japanese (median 158%).

What English chase cards did after launch day
Pitch Black launched July 17, 2026, 84 days before this piece. On launch day its Mega Darkrai ex Special Illustration Rare sold for $380.81, 2.0x what the Japanese one sells for today. By Oct 9 it was $149.83 (-61%); the gold card went $343.55 to $138.43 (-60%). Its other Special Illustration Rares fell 52% to 65%. English prices open high and come down from there, which is why the shares above, measured months after each launch, are a settled price and not a launch-week one.
| Pitch Black card | Launch day | +30 days | Oct 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Zeraora ex Special Illustration Rare | $119.53 | $64.05 | $41.66 (-65%) |
| Mega Darkrai ex Special Illustration Rare | $380.81 | $208.27 | $149.83 (-61%) |
| Mega Darkrai ex Mega Hyper Rare | $343.55 | $172.57 | $138.43 (-60%) |
| Mega Chandelure ex Special Illustration Rare | $81.80 | $47.65 | $35.10 (-57%) |
| Morpeko ex Special Illustration Rare | $145.99 | $97.46 | $64.07 (-56%) |
| Gwynn Special Illustration Rare | $56.02 | $36.63 | $26.83 (-52%) |
When this reasoning fails
- If the Japanese gold price is stale. One copy sold in 30 days is not a market. The English estimate for the gold card rests on that one number, so treat it as the widest range on the page.
- If Rayquaza sells like Charizard X. Of the 3 headline Special Illustration Rares that cost $100 or more in Japanese, Mega Charizard X ex kept the most of its price in English, 93%. At that share the English Mega Rayquaza ex would settle near $277, not $259. Rayquaza's Japanese gold card already sells above Charizard X's.
- If the English pull rates differ. The shares above compare finished markets; a set where the English chase is harder to pull than the Japanese one would sell higher.
- If Delta Reign adds cards. English sets sometimes print cards the Japanese set did not have, and those have no Japanese price to start from.

Data notes
Prices are TCGplayer market prices captured nightly by The Lab TCG, as of October 9, 2026. Our Japanese catalog starts September 7, 2026, so Japanese changes run from that date. Japanese and English cards are matched by Pokémon or trainer and by rarity slot (Mega Ultra Rare to Mega Hyper Rare, Special Art Rare to Special Illustration Rare, Super Rare to Ultra Rare, Art Rare to Illustration Rare); a card with two printings in the same slot is left out rather than guessed. Copies sold are TCGplayer sales over the last 30 days from our card pages. Launch-day prices are the snapshot dated launch day exactly; where it is missing we show none. The estimates are arithmetic on the last four sets, not a forecast. Not financial advice.
